Preventative Dentistry
Your overall health starts with your oral health. Healthy teeth and mouth lend to healthy eating and nutrition for your body!
Oral hygiene is important and must be cared for every day with a disciplined home care routine.
Preventative dentistry services include: dental cleanings and exams, dental hygiene education, gum disease (periodontal) treatments, state of the art dental technologies to help prevent future problems, and oral cancer screenings. At each of your dental hygiene visits, we will evaluate each area, discuss your needs, and make appropriate suggestions to fit your needs.
Dental Cleanings and Exams
Our dental hygienists and dentist will perform a dental cleaning, exam, oral cancer screening, and any necessary x-rays at your visit at least two times a year.
Gum Disease and Periodontal Treatments
Gum disease, periodontal disease, and gingivitis should be taken very seriously. At Georgetown Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we educate our patients so that they understand the complete scope of their oral health.
Gum disease affects roughly half of Americans age 30 and older, and while there are different types of gum disease, once the gum becomes red, swollen, and bleeds easily it is important to let your dentist and hygienist know right away. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral health care at home. However, if left unchecked, it can progress rapidly to gum recession, bone loss, tooth loss, and pain. Also bacteria from gum disease can affect overall health – sometimes leading to heart, blood vessel, diabetic problems, infections, etc. In extreme cases, oral infections have even resulted in death!
Dental Hygiene
Dental hygiene is important as part of your overall health routine. Dr. Tyler Wolf recommends these steps as part of your oral hygiene routine:
- Regular home care (brushing twice a day and flossing once a day)
- Regular visits to Georgetown Family and Cosmetic Dentistry
- Thorough professional cleaning
- Repair of chips or cracks when they’re still small
- Decay intervention (cavities)
- Oral cancer checks
- Gum disease diagnosis and treatment plan
- Receiving, accepting, and implementing dental care information and tips from us, your dentist in Jenison and the surrounding areas.
- Brushing and flossing instruction
- Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports that have the chance of impacting your teeth (hockey, basketball, in-line skating, football, soccer, etc.)
- Wearing a night guard to prevent damage from bruxism (grinding and clenching)
- Not using your teeth as tools
State-of-the-Art Dental Technology
We are always evolving our technology at Georgetown Family and Cosmetic Dentistry and at your visits you can expect nothing but the best. Digital panoramic x-rays, digital bitewings, or digital single-tooth evaluations have virtually eliminated any concern you should have for having x-rays. Digital intraoral cameras make diagnosis of problems so much easier. Not to mention our single-visit dentistry solutions with CEREC!
Oral Cancer Screening
Dr. Wolf will perform an oral cancer screening with every recare examination. He is examining the roof of the mouth, tonsils, inner cheeks, gums, and tongue. He will also check the jaw, neck, under the chin, and the outside of your cheeks to feel for any unusual masses or firm nodules.
